Is It Still a Fantasy Book If I Only Care About the Couple?

Updated: Nov 21, 2025

Is it still considered a fantasy book if you only care about the couple?

Is it still a fantasy book if I only care about the couple?

Okay, hear me out.

There’s a war brewing. A crown on the line. A chosen one rising. The world is crumbling, a magical relic has been stolen, and the fate of the realm hangs by a thread... But I’m over here whispering: “Yeah, yeah, but are they gonna kiss or what?”

If this is you too, then welcome home.

As a reader (and a romantasy writer), I’ve had this internal crisis more times than I can count. There I am, neck-deep in complex worldbuilding, ancient prophecies, and high-stakes political intrigue... and all I really want to know is whether the main characters will finally admit their feelings.

Do I love fantasy? Yes. Do I adore dragons, dark magic, and epic battles? Absolutely. But if there’s even a hint of romance between two brooding, morally gray idiots who pretend they don’t care but actually burn for each other—that’s it. That’s the plot now.

Is It Still a Fantasy Book If I Only Care About the Couple? Let's Be Honest...

We say we’re here for the world-saving quest, but we’re really here for:

  • The forbidden glances across war tables

  • The “you scared me” hug after a near-death scene

  • The moment when one character finally says, “I’d choose you. Every time.”

And you know what? That is part of the fantasy. Because yes, magic systems and lore are amazing, but give me a love story that makes my chest ache and I will follow your characters to the ends of the earth (and probably through multiple books and several emotional breakdowns).

Is It Still a Fantasy Book?

Absolutely.

Fantasy and romance are not opposites—they’re soulmates. The emotional stakes of a great romance only make the magical stakes hit harder. It’s not just about saving the world anymore... It’s about saving someone’s world.

Do you ever completely forget the plot because you're too obsessed with whether the couple is going to get together?

Drop your favourite “the romance is the real reason I kept reading” book in the comments. I need more to obsess over immediately.
